Drainpipes

Wood drainpipes

The earliest drainpipes were made of wood, sometimes lined with lead.

Metal drainpipes

By the end of the 18th century, they were constructed entirely of lead or of cast iron.

Rear only

Good taste required that rainwater pipes which would spoil the pure lines of the facade should be confined to the rear walls wherever possible. even the gutter serving the front parapet wall and the drain for the centre valley of M-section roofs were often made to run into a lead-lined trough passing through to the back of the building.
