Railings

Areas

The more expensive terraced houses had basement with a small forecourt called the “area” in the front to allow light to enter the basement windows. To prevent people falling off the pavement into the area, railings were constructed round it at street level, usually with a metal gate leading down steps to a basement door.

Patterns

Early Georgian railings had a regular leaf or spear-shaped pattern at the top. Later, more elaborate patterns were created as advances in the manufacture of wrought and cast iron provided opportunities for more inventiveness. Robert Adam introduced anthemion and other floral designs.

Paint colour

Railings are now almost always painted black, but in Georgian times they were painted green.
